PROGRAMME Day 0: Sunday August 29 – afternoon Registration, Welcome reception followed by a Movie presentation and Public Conference "Mais que font les agronomes ?" on the Hot Topics for Agricultural Research (in French). Day 1: Monday August 30 International symposium “Agronomy for Sustainable Development” with high level contributions opening the dialogue between scientists, policy makers and stakeholders on the major challenges for Agronomic Research in Europe and in the developing countries.

Potential subjects to structure the Science-Society dialogue and on which Agro2010 could give feed back to policy makers are listed under the “Hot Topics list” established by the Scientific Committee. These issues will be used as a guideline for key notes speakers of this session and for chairperson of all sessions of Agro2010. The Scientific Committee will reflect on the output from this conference for these various issues and will prepare on Day 5 a note to suggest future directions for Agronomic Research to Policy Makers.

Day 2: Tuesday August 31
Parallel symposia on scientific advances and challenges of interdisciplinary research around Agronomy

• Co-designing plants and crops for new targets (S2.1): At the crossroads of plant physiology, genetics and agronomy this symposium will cover the following questions: how to combine genetics and management to design new crops for new challenges: adaptation to climate change, low input, biofuels, green chemistry ?
• Ecological intensification of cropping systems in European, Mediterranean and Tropical environments (S2.2): At the crossroads of ecology – soil science and agronomy this symposium will cover the following questions: how to produce more with less land and input ?. What can we expect from soil and ecological regulation management in cropping systems ? How to define trade-offs between production and ecosystems services in cropping systems ?
• Assessment and design of technological and agro-ecological policies for sustainable development in agricultural regions (S2.3): At the crossroads of economy and agronomy this symposium will cover the following questions: how to design and assess policies policies that are effective and efficient in realizing policy and societal objectives? How to design cropping systems to cope with policy objectives, farmers constraints and economic conditions ?

Day 3: Wednesday September 1st
“The Heart and the Art of Agronomy”: scientific advances and challenges of Agronomy as a Science - Sessions organised by the three new ESA divisions

• D1 - Crop System Biology: The functioning of the plant in a field.
• D2 - Field Scale Agroecology: The cultivated field as an ecosystem.
• D3 - Cropping Systems at Farm, Regional and Global Scales: the Cropping System in its embedding systems.
  

Day 4: Thursday September 2nd  - in parallel
Agriculture and Culture in Languedoc-Roussillon: field trips combining meetings with farmers, tasting of regional products and visits of monuments.
	Seminar "Innovation and decision aid in agriculture: Which roles of research and which partnerships": This symposium will illustrate and analyse how research in agronomy can contribute to a sustainable agricultural progress, in both African and European contexts, through various types of deliverables and through diverse modes of interaction between research, farmers and their organizations, extension services and agro industry.
