« Analyzing the sustainability of RSPO Certification as a tool of improving agroecological practices in oil palm plantations / Diana Chalil, Universitas Sumatera Utara, Indonesia /02-10-2018, 10h-12h, Agropolis International, Montpellier

Palm oil is one of the most widely studied commodities in the world. Its huge plantation size within humid tropical zones raise concerns on the worldwide environmental impact. With its increasing needs and demand, palm oil cannot simply be banned, hence sustainability certifications are proposed as a tool to improve agroecological practices in oil palm plantations.

Recently agroecology is not defined exclusively by scientific fields. Similar understanding is accepted in sustainable palm oil certification such as RSPO and ISPO, which accommodate the social and economic dimensions besides the environmental aspect.
Previous studies show that certified smallholders significantly improved their good agricultural practices as well as their income. However, from the total number of smallholders in the world, less than 5% has successfully been certified. Certification requires high costs and extra efforts, especially for smallholders. However, until 2017 only less than 60% of the CSPO are traded with premium price, thus the extra costs for certification are hardly covered. This brings difficulties and disincentives, especially for smallholders, to obtain certification.

Using Indonesia-France monthly and quarterly CPO price data, the Autoregressive Distributed Lag and Error Correction Model results show that prices are not transmitted along the supply chain. If such a condition continues, the sustainability of sustainable palm oil certification might be in risk. While RSPO certification has the potential in improving agroecological practices in oil palm plantations, the success depends on the commitment of all stakeholders along the supply chain.
